who cycled in the USA ???? - 04/21/03 12:31 AM

Hi there,

I'm planing to make a tour from NYC over Washington DC and Cleveland to Chicago. I'm from Germany and have never made a tour in the US so far. Who can recommend some good maps in a large scale, suiteable for finding nice, smaller streets to cycle on (I couldn't find some so far...). Perhaps you also know a good book or webpage, that could help me planing my route ???

Thank you for any answer!!!!

Hi,

Look at 'Adventure Cycling Association' site. They have special maps of TransAmerica cycle routes with a lot of relevant information (campsites etc.). You can buy a complete set for the different routes which they call 'Tiers'.

Cheaper to buy if your a member than not. May be worth joining for your trip.

Hi,

you can also use ordinary street maps. Rand McNally is one company publishing maps for just about every state. They are very detailed. If you pick small roads, you'll be seeing a lot of the "real" America, not just what most other cyclists get to see by using the 'Adventure Cycling Association' maps.

While travelling, ask locals, they quite often know of beautiful sideroads that aren't part of any official bike path / tracks. wink

Hi,

you could also look into www.pedaling.com, they have a lot of suggestions for tours (more than 1000 for the whole of the US). I haven't tried any of the tours, but that might be a good starting point for planning...
