It's been a long time since this question, but it is still a good advice:
a popular place for leaving your box is the biggest camping in the city of Reykjavik. In 2016 they had two rooms filled with bicycle boxes! People just putting packed bicycles into Keflavik-Reykjavik buses and mount them during first camping night.
